Once every few years the church my mother attended had a foot washing. This ritual represented Mary's washing of Jesus' feet with her own hair. Mom let me go to a foot washing once. The people in her church ran around barefooted with little washcloths and plastic dish-tubs. The men sat on the altars, and the women sat in the first pew. Everyone had removed their shoes and socks. The ones sitting presented their feet to the first person who plopped down in front of them with a tub. After placing their feet in the warm water, the person kneeling washed between their toes. Then they dried the feet with a towel and moved down the line. After a time, the ones sitting traded places with the washers. But they never changed the water. I guess that would be like draining the baptism tank after every dunking. After all, if the rest of the church had spent as much time making sure their feet were clean--like Mom did before she came to church--the water in those dish-tubs couldn't have been too dirty.
